AIDS Vancouver

Short Description:
Students from Dr. Paul Kennedy's KIN 469 class gathered information by interacting with clients to identify common health and fitness needs of AIDS Vancouver users. They combined their findings with research about the benefits of physical activity for HIV/AIDS, successful fitness initiatives, and appropriate guidelines. They put their findings into a tailored exercise guide with resistance band. These packages for patients were provided in addition to informative pamphlets for staff and patients to dispel myths about exercise in HIV/AIDS and to provide suggestions on increasing activity safely. Students also delivered interactive health and fitness information sessions to help kick-start the uptake of their new tools.

Short Description:
Students completed a literature review to gather evidence supporting the benefits of exercise for those dealing with mental health issues or recovering from addictions. They found convincing support for exercise as an integral part of treatment plans for mental health and addictions populations. Students created a simple, user-friendly informational package encouraging patients to engage in exercise, outlining the benefits, and suggesting ways to incorporate activity and nutrition into everyday living.

REACH Community Health Center

Short Description:
Seven fourth year kinesiology students spent a semester working on a community service learning project with REACH Community Health Centre last fall for Dr. Paul Kennedy’s KIN 469. REACH is a well-established non-profit society in the downtown Eastside that endeavours to help the marginalized population with medical and dental needs with a diverse inter-disciplinary team in a culturally sensitive and relevant manner. They were asked to help develop a guide for REACH patients depicting how to decrease risk and manage diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis with exercise.  The students interviewed REACH staff, patients, and community members to determine the population’s needs, language barriers before developing their exercise education tool.  Students put together in-person workshops to educate patients on how to properly perform exercises and the developed a guide, complete with many pictorial elements, to allow REACH staff and patients to continue using the tool after the students completed their project.
