Job description
Do you have an interest in Rehabilitation Sciences (OT/PT)? Considering applying to post-grad programs? This is your opportunity to gain some valuable hands-on experience working with children 8-12 years old with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).
The 2017 summer program for kids with DCD will offer participants a chance to engage in a group therapy program specifically designed for children with DCD. Up to 20 children, ages 8-12 will be enrolled in the 2 week day-camp which will be run out of the Creekside Community Center in the Athlete’s village on False Creek. The curriculum of the program will include lots of opportunities to have open discussions about DCD – what it is, how it affects children with the condition and how to manage many different aspects of DCD.
Participants will also work on developing strategies to improve their ability to learn new motor skills, and determine which type of activities are better suited to children with DCD. There will be opportunities to experience dragon boating, rock climbing and exploring the north shore mountains among other outings.
In order for the camp to be successful, we rely heavily on volunteers – with a goal of having a 2 kids:1staff ratio for the camp. Potential volunteers should have an interest in rehab sciences, be responsible and safety oriented as well as having experience working with children of this age group. There will be a pre-camp training session for all volunteers selected to participate in this year’s program.
The program itself is designed and organized by both a Physiotherapist and an Occupational Therapist from the Vancouver Regional Pediatric Team and will be run under the Vancouver Coastal Health Banner.
Hours/time commitment
8:45am to 3:15 pm Monday to Friday for the first two weeks of July (Tuesday July 4 – Friday July 14, 2017) *Monday July 3 is a stat.
1/2 day training session prior to camp start- date to be determined once volunteers are confirmed.
Camp will be run out of the Creekside Community Centre at the east end of False Creek.
