Student Coach Program:

UBC Strength & Conditioning’s Student Coach Program allows undergraduate students in the School of Kinesiology to apply the knowledge they’ve gained in the classroom in a practical, hands-on environment. It is a 13-week program and students are expected to complete 5-7 hours per/week.


UBC Strength & Conditioning’s Student Coach Program is for current undergraduate students in the School of Kinesiology looking to gain practical experience in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Prospective applicants looking to work in the fields of Strength and Conditioning, Sports Science, Physiotherapy and/or Athletic Therapy or Sports Medicine are encouraged to apply. Experiences will be focused on Strength and Conditioning, but may include exercise physiology, performance analysis, biomechanics, injury rehabilitation, proactive health care and nutrition. We strive to create positive experiential learning, knowledge translation, and opportunities to develop the “soft skills” required for accelerated success in the future careers of our student coaches. This position is open to 1st through 5th year students.
Expected learning opportunities, roles and responsibilities will vary depending on competencies and will always be under the supervision, direction and discretion of our Head and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coaches.


Responsibilities will vary between successful candidates depending on individual competencies and may evolve over time. They include, but are not limited to:

• Shadow and observe strength & conditioning coaches during training and testing
• Assist with delivery of training and testing sessions as directed by the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach or Session Lead
• Set-up for training and testing sessions
• Logging of training, testing and athlete monitoring data
• Assist with data collection using force plates, jump mats and other sports science tools
• Attends all orientation sessions, staff meetings and professional development sessions
• Provide support with updating and maintaining athlete training programs
• Assist with video or filming of training sessions
• Assist with weight room supervision and facility maintenance
• Lead pre- & post-activity plans and warm ups

• Comfortable working within and speaking to large groups
• Enrolled in a minimum of 3 courses per semester and in good academic standing
• Strong interest in sport performance and a passion for strength & conditioning
• Highly motivated
• Basic-to-intermediate level competency in Microsoft Word and Excel

Preferred Skills:

• First Aid & CPR
• Sport background
• Working towards an NSCA, NASM or ACSM personal training or strength and conditioning certificate
• Previous coaching experience (this is not specific to strength & conditioning or personal training)


• Gain hands on coaching experience working with upwards of 650 athletes and 25 teams in a fast paced training environment
• Gain knowledge and experience with performance testing, data collection and analysis
• Experience in the daily training environment of UBC varsity athletes while working alongside our professional staff
• Learn the “how” and “why” to program for our varsity teams
• Gain experience in areas such as: weightlifting technique/corrections, use of force plates and other sports science technology, warm-ups, cool downs and activation sessions
• Daily collaboration with the Head and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach and Graduate Assistant Coaches
• Bi-Monthly Professional Development sessions led by our team of coaches as well as external practitioners in such fields as: physiotherapy, athletic therapy, data/analytics and dietetics
• Opportunities to be part of our IST (Integrated Support Team)
• Resume building and review
• Guidance and opportunities for directed studies

Hours/time commitment

5-7+ hours/week (flexible)

• Program End Date: April 6th, 2018
