The Kinesiology Career Fair is an excellent opportunity to find out information about further educational and career exploration opportunities, featuring a variety of employers from private and non-profit organizations, and graduate programs.

Working Towards a Healthy Community

Are you curious about how healthy communities are built? Are you interested in learning more about the people behind community activity programs? Do you want to know more about safe sporting practices or what it takes to organise large sporting events? Join us for this interactive panel with community leaders who are at the forefront of “Working Towards a Healthy Community”.

Speakers:

Christina Sequeira is a UBC alumna who graduated with a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. Her focus during her Master’s degree was exploring the need for Kinesiologist and health care provider collaboration in preventive medicine with an emphasis on finding ways to enhance population health interventions for aging and chronic disease populations. She is an ACSM certified Clinical Exercise Specialist, a CSEP certified Exercise Physiologist and she also holds a Level III Exercise in Medicine. Through the UBC Body Works Fitness Centre, where she was the Program Manager employed by the UBC School of Kinesiology, she brought her expertise in clinical case management to the forefront of mainstream fitness. As the new Active Living Coordinator for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, she will be able to make a greater public health impact. She will be working in a primary health care context focusing on the creation of community-based physical activity opportunities through health promotion and program development. With an aim to reduce health disparities in high risk populations, she will work directly with the public and community agencies.

With over 25 years of experience in brand management and engagement, event marketing and communications, sponsorship, consumer sales & promotions, government & stakeholder relations and fundraising, Jamie has provided oversight, advice and leadership on major local and national events and programs for both the profit and not-for-profit sectors. As a member of the Senior Management Team at the BC Lions Football Club & General Manager of the 102nd Grey Cup Festival, Jamie oversaw the staging of Canada’s largest sports festival and iconic championship. Following the Grey Cup, Jamie became the Director of Fan Engagement and was responsible for Game Day presentation, special events, marketing, merchandising and social media. As a member of the Senior Management Team at Pacific Newspaper Group, Jamie was responsible for community investment strategy, event sponsorship and activation, consumer sales, promotions & contests, media relations and corporate spokesperson. Jamie spearheaded several major community events such as the Vancouver Sun Run, Raise a Reader Campaign, Adopt a School & The Province Empty Stocking Fund.

Glen Mulcahy has both played and coached competitive sports and is passionate about sharing what he has learned to bring the game back to the kids and to lead others to do the same. As a Hockey Canada NCCP Facilitator for BC Hockey, Glen has interacted with over 2500 coaches in the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association since 2009. With a degree in Physical Education (Motor Control and Performance Major) from UBC and as a result of a life-time of involvement in sports of all levels, Glen brings a unique “360 degree view” of what it takes to support players to enjoy the game from the recreational to the high performance level. He has coached adults, boys and girls now for over 20 years in various sports, and is a parent providing support to two child athletes of his own.

Glen’s belief in focusing on the FUNdamentals of the game, including inspiring a shift towards a greater sense of respect for these fundamentals and away from the current game-centric and winning at all costs thinking is both refreshing and inspiring. He is a speaker for Changing the Game Project, contributor to One Million Skates, and ally with numerous sports agencies in addition to his ongoing role as Hockey Canada NCCP facilitator and regional evaluation coordinator for BC Hockey. Besides impacting the sports world, Glen aspires to do to a TED Talk and write a book on ‘Don’t be a kids last coach.’

We are looking for a qualified trainer to join our team!

The successful applicant will have:
1) 4 year degree in exercise science or kinesiology (4th year students will be considered)
2) A current certification through one of the following bodies: CSEP, NSCA, ACSM, NASM, or BCAK
3) The following certifications are beneficial, but not required: FMS Level I/II, Strong First/RKC Level 1, Medical Exercise Specialist
4) The successful applicants will be invited to intern for a minimum of 40hrs. Although the internship is unpaid there are many perks and learning opportunities. The 40hrs is an estimate; some may finish it faster while others may take longer to complete it.

BC Emergency Health Services

BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) is aligned with the Provincial Health Services Authority. BCEHS has two main lines of business: BC Ambulance Service, which provides pre-hospital emergency health services throughout the province, and the BC Patient Transfer Network, which provides information on available beds and assists physicians with the timely transfer of patients to the appropriate level of care. The nurses in the HealthLink BC Contact Centers are also employees of BCEHS. They respond to 8-1-1 calls and provide non-emergency information to the residents of BC.

BCEHS is responsible for the delivery, coordination and governance of out-of-hospital emergency health services and inter-facility patient transfer planning and coordination services through the BC Ambulance Service and the BC Patient Transfer Network.

British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists

The BCAK promotes kinesiology in BC as a valuable health care service. It supports the advancement of the profession and provides resources to its members to assist them in their practice.
The association provides information about the profession of kinesiology to the public, governments and other stakeholders and is affiliated with the Canadian Kinesiology Alliance, which promotes the profession on a national basis.

BC Recreation and Parks Association

BC Recreation and Parks Association is a not for profit organization that is the delivery system for healthy active living programs and initiatives in BC.

Since its inception in 1984, the role of the BCRPA Fitness Registration Program has been to identify and promote the highest professional standards for fitness leaders in BC. With over 4,500 registered fitness leaders, the BCRPA is the largest fitness registry in Canada and has gained recognition as 'the' standard against which the qualifications of a fitness leader may be measured and is widely regarded as the regulatory body for fitness professionals throughout the Province of British Columbia.

Canadian Armed Forces

Physiotherapy Officers assess, educate and treat Forces members for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. They establish treatment plans for a variety of orthopaedic, cardio-respiratory, neuro-musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy issues.

As a member of the Canadian Forces Health Services team, Physiotherapy Officers are responsible for assessing injury and developing treatment plans with the objective of returning Forces members to active duty. They also provide advice and guidance in:

HELP Client Service

Volunteer needed to work with clients and health care professionals to fulfill equipment requests. Must be able to maintain paper and/or computer records regarding loans and returns, respond to phone enquiries regarding HELP and other Red Cross programs and receive financial donations.

Personal Disaster Assistance Team Responder

As a Personal Disaster Assistance Team Responder volunteer, you will take 40 hours of National Red Cross training to learn how to best support those affected by disasters. After this training is completed, you will become part of a larger response team that can be activated for both small and large-scale disasters.

Opportunities:
Recruiting 1-2 sport physiology interns for our high performance laboratory.

This position will provide the student with an introduction to fundamental operations of the high performance sport laboratory while gaining basic laboratory skills and receiving mentorship from CSI Pacific performance services team working with elite athletes and conducting research. The key deliverables of this position will be to learn basic lab skills, assist with data collection and data management from research and testing, and completion of a small project based on collaboration between supervisor and intern.

Grad student preferred, but 3rd or 4th year undergrad students are also welcome to apply.

ConnecTra-Employment Mentorship Support Project

A research project through ConnecTra and U.B.C. Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy for persons with a physical disability. Individuals who have a desire to find and secure employment, training, education, increased social involvement, and betterment of their communities.

Opportunities:
People with disabilities have many skills to share with the world but in many cases need someone’s assistance to be realized. The ConnecTra Society is a non-profit organization that is seeking volunteers to mentor people with physical disabilities. The position involves working with ConnecTra staff and meeting one-on-one to help them determine their goals and how to achieve them. This can include employment, volunteering, recreation or increased social engagement. Volunteers need up top ½ day a week for an 8 month commitment with experience in business, government, or increased social engagement.
Volunteers should: previously employed, age 19-65, pass criminal record check, attend an orientation, commit to 8 month project.

Special Olympics BC is supported by over 3400 volunteers across the province. All programs are run by volunteers - they are the driving force behind the success of SOBC! Sportball offers non-competitive sports instruction for children 16 months – 12 years old. Kids are introduced to 8 popular sports: soccer, hockey, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, golf & football.
Sportball is a non-competitive, skills-focused sports program that introduces children between the ages of 16 months and 12 years to eight sports: soccer, hockey, football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, and golf. . Coaches focus on the basic skills common to all sports, like balance, coordination, stamina and timing in a fun, supportive, non-competitive setting that emphasizes teamwork.
