In History

Graduates of the School are some of the leading pioneers in many fields. UBC Athletics historian, Fred Hume has amassed a list of notable Kin Alumni athletes who have achieved great things in their athletics career and after. Read and learn about some of our proud athletic alumni here.

Fred Hume entered the UBC Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 nearly 22 years after he began working to uncover the great UBC teams, athletes and builders of sport dating back to 1915. The UBC graduate’s efforts soon resulted in the establishment and development of the UBC Sports Hall of Fame which has been instrumental in re-connecting the university with hundreds of its most accomplished athletic alumni encouraging them to become more directly involved with the campus and their former teams.


Hunt, Ted

Graduating year: 1957, 1961
Degree: BPE, MPE
In his graduating year Hunt was awarded the Bobby Gaul award as UBC’s athlete of the year at the same time selected the province’s Athlete of the Year. That summer (1957) Hunt tried out with the BC Lions football team and not only made the team but was named the Lions’ Rookie of the Year. The following year, he was selected the team’s Outstanding Canadian Player of the Year.

Jackson, Roger

Graduating year: 1967
Degree: MPE
Dr. Jackson has a most impressive list of honours and acknowledgements including: the BC and UBC Sports Halls of Fame, UBC Alumni Achievement Award, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the IOC Olympic Order and the Order of Canada.

Jameson, Stephanie

Graduating year: 2006
Stream: BKin
Stephanie Jameson, a 2006 UBC Kinesiology graduate, experienced an exceptional Thunderbird athletic career as a field hockey player under coach Hash Kanjee. Not only was she a luminary in this sport but is also unique in that her mother, Sue Rich, was also a field hockey standout preceding Stephanie as a Physical Education (Kinesiology) graduate in 1973.

Job, Christiane

Graduating year: 2008
Degree: MA-Kin
Christiane “Chrissy” Job graduated from UBC in 2008 with a Masters of Arts in Kinesiology followed by her PhD at the University of Calgary.

Kiloh, Bruce

Graduating year: 1973
Degree: BPE
Bruce played both UBC varsity soccer and varsity football the latter under a coach Bruce still admires, the late Frank Gnup. Following a serious football injury Bruce became the student manager of the Thunderbird football team followed by being elected president of the UBC Big Block Club and of UBC Men’s Athletics. Kimoto, Ray

Graduating year:1965
Degree: BPE
Ray graduated from UBC having played Thunderbird tennis and baseball., the latter under legendary UBC coach Frank Gnup. This was the “early era” of UBC baseball which produced many good players, memories and stories.

Kinghorn, Marilyn Peterson

Graduating year: 1961
Degree: BPE
At UBC she was considered one of the city’s top basketball players as she was selected to the team representing BC at the 1959 national championships. In 1960 she was a key member of UBC’s first Western Canadian women’s asketball champions, a title she and her teammates would win again in 1961.

Laycoe, Bob (1947-2020)

Graduating year: 1969
Degree: MPE
Bob was an inspirational player on the Thunderbird football team while competing on UBC’s wrestling team, a team that won Western Canadian and Canadian university championships.

MacFarlane, Dave

Graduating year: 1989
Degree: BPE
Dave Macfarlane is another example of the diversity in career paths taken by UBC graduates in Physical Education (Human Kinetics/Kinesiology). A 1989 graduate, Dave played Thunderbird hockey in 1984-85 under the coaching of Fred Masuch.

MacKinnon, Dean

Graduating year: 1966
Degree: BPE
While a student, Dean played basketball under coach Hugh Marshall at John Oliver high school then attending UBC played on the Thunderbird rugby team. He was a pretty fair athlete which is required when refereeing high school basketball games, a career he began around age 30.
