BCIT Prosthetics and Orthodics program

"The field of prosthetics and orthotics is a combination of providing essential patient care, working creatively with ones’ hands, applying research evidence, and incorporating cutting edge technology. Prosthetists and Orthotists design and fabricate custom orthopedic devices and provide lifelong treatment to those in need. Prosthetists work with those who have experienced limb loss and Orthotists work with those who have an injury or pathology requiring bracing or support. It is a rewarding, ever changing, and challenging profession. The prosthetics and orthotics program at BCIT is one of 2 accredited schools in Canada. Students in the program learn the clinical methods related to providing prosthetic and orthotic treatment. This 2-year program includes a heavy focus on the skills and knowledge to become a Canadian Certified Prosthetist and/or Orthotist, as well as weekly clinical rotations, 2 x 4 week placements, and a capstone research project. UBC Active Kids
The Active Kids Program is an Outreach program of the UBC School of Kinesiology. Lookout provides housing and a range of support services to adults with low to no income that have few, if any, housing or support services. Because they have challenges in meeting needs and goals, we place minimal barriers between them and our services.

Disability Foundation

Our Mission: Through our societies, we provide opportunities for people with physical disabilities to enable their individual journeys. Vision: The Disability Foundation empowers and inspires people with physical disabilities to re-imagine what is possible. How we help: The Disability Foundation primarily supports six charitable societies that provide accessible and meaningful activities. These societies are British Columbia Mobility Opportunities Society, Disabled Independent Gardeners Association, ConnecTra Society, Disabled Sailing Society, Tetra and Vancouver Adapted Music Society.

BC Wheelchair Sports

BC Wheelchair Sports Association (BCWSA) is a multi-sport Provincial Sporting Organization (PSO) that supports people with physical disabilities across the province to lead active and healthy lives through wheelchair sports. Collectively as an organization, we are committed to being strong advocates for athletes with disabilities and work to reduce barriers to participation in sport. Specifically, BC Wheelchair Sports facilitates programs for three sports: Wheelchair Tennis, Wheelchair Rugby, and Wheelchair Athletics (track and field). Within our sports, we work with various levels of athletes, anywhere from the grassroots level of individuals with newly acquired injuries and beginners, to high-performance National Team Athletes and Paralympians of all abilities. Alongside our regular weekly programs throughout B.C., we host various inclusive programs and events, including our GO Time Girls Only Programming and Annual Junior Wheelchair Multi-Sport Camps. BCWSA also hosts large-scale international tournaments such as our International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament, and Vancouver International Wheelchair Tennis Tournament. These high-profile events host the top athletes from all over the world and help support the development of excellence in each of their sports. BCWSA also facilitates first-introduction-to-sport opportunities through an initiative called “The Bridging the Gap (BTG) Program”. Bridging the Gap is a program specifically designed to help individuals with physical disabilities become aware of the sport and recreation options available, and to try out wheelchair sports of their choice. It is a national initiative that encourages people to get active and stay active; and by hosting a series of “Have a Go” days, connecting with partners across the country to build beginner programs, and offering Wheelchair Loan Programs, BTG programming helps reduce barriers to sport participation. SportMedBC is a professional not-for-profit society comprised of sport medical and paramedical practitioners in British Columbia. As past of the provincial sport system, SportMedBC promotes sport safety and best practices for injury prevention and management through our SportMed Safety Program, providing the BC sport and athletic community with leadership, education and training. SportMedBC also offers coordinated services to athletes and teams, by providing medical coverage for various sporting events across the province.

KidStart - PLEA Community Services Society

KidStart is a one-to-one volunteer mentoring program available to children and youth who face challenges at home, at school, or in the community. KidStart Mentors develop supportive relationships with their mentees, encouraging them to participate in activities that allow them to experience success and by being positive role models.

Association of Canadian Ergonomists
The Association of Canadian Ergonomists (ACE) is a bilingual, professional association of individuals and organizations with a common interest in advancing ergonomics and human factors knowledge and practice. ACE unites and advances the knowledge and skills of Ergonomics and Human Factors practitioners to optimise human and organisational well-being. ACE's vision is that the world needs great products, work, and systems achieved through the application of Human Factors and Ergonomics. The Association of Canadian Ergonomists/Association Canadienne d’Ergonomie (ACE), established in 1968 is a bilingual, professional association with over 500 members comprised of individuals and organizations from coast to coast. ACE has five regional chapters: Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie & Northern, British Columbia / Yukon. The presidents of these chapters are also members of National Council.

PARC (Physical Activity Research Centre):ICORD
The Yuel Family Physical Activity Research Centre (PARC) is a community-based research facility that is committed to providing opportunities for the local spinal cord injury (SCI) community to participate in research on exercise and physical activity. We envision that the PARC will nurture an active exchange of ideas between the community of individuals living with SCI and ICORD (International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries) researchers. In terms of research the main goal of PARC is to advance research to understand the best strategies for providing opportunities for people with complete or partial paralysis due to spinal cord dysfunction to participate in exercise and physical activity. We plan to elucidate the best approaches to providing opportunities for people with SCI in and around Vancouver to participate in exercise and physical activity. We will also investigate whether increasing physical activity and exercise leads to benefits in different aspects of your physical function, fitness and quality of life.

PURE(Program for Undergraduate Research): School of Kinesiology
UBC committed $1M in strategic funds over two years for the Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE). The call for proposals was open to faculty, staff and students from both Vancouver and Okanagan campuses for innovative pilot projects.
