Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

Practice applying course concepts in a new way with your peers, gain a deeper understanding of anatomy and physiology and build your skills in a fun learning environment.

What is PASS?

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) are highly interactive, free, structured group study sessions designed to help students understand key concepts and practice the skills necessary for success in traditionally challenging courses.  PASS sessions are structured around the prior week’s lecture material, and help you students develop a deeper understanding of complex concepts.  These sessions compliment what you learn while attending lectures, labs, meeting with your TA and attending office hours, but they are not a replacement.

Our learning environments are welcoming, supportive and fun and we focus on helping you gain a deeper understanding of the course material and improving your study skills without concerns about being graded.

Students who have attended PASS have identified the top three outcomes:

  • Enhanced their ability to follow along during class
  • More comfortable engaging with new or unknown material
  • Improved their ability to better perform on class assessments

In 2019/20, PASS leaders will be offering small group sessions to support students taking:
Winter Term 1: KIN 110— Anatomy, & KIN 131 - Systems Physiology I
Winter Term 2: KIN 110— Anatomy, & KIN 131 - Systems Physiology I

PASS focuses on utilizing active learning techniques, which means you will be engaging with the course materials in a variety of different ways that promotes collaboration with your peers.

Sessions are designed to:

  • Gain a more in-depth understanding of the course content
  • Meet students from your class in a small group setting
  • Test your knowledge about your course prior to tests and exams
  • Develop transferable study skills

Research has shown that the more PASS sessions students attend, the greater likelihood they are of improving their overall understanding of key concepts, which results in achieving higher grades.

Sessions are run by senior undergraduate students who have been trained to incorporate a variety of different activities, games, mock quizzes and techniques to help you progress each week throughout the semester.   PASS sessions are not like lectures or tutorials. Here's what you can expect a PASS leader to do:

  • Plan sessions that cover key concepts in your course
  • Encourage you and the group to collaborate on different activities to encourage your learning. They will not lecture or host FAQ sessions
  • Provide a supportive environment where you can work towards progressing in your course and achieving your academic goals

Come and join our fun and dynamic learning community, spend time with other Kinners and work together to build your academic base in Anatomy and Physiology.
