Welcome to the Psychology of Exercise, Health, and Physical Activity Laboratory (PEHPA Lab).
The PEHPA Lab is overseen by Dr. Mark Beauchamp, who is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology at The University of British Columbia and a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar (Population Health). Drawing from diverse disciplines (that include behavioural medicine, organizational psychology, and education) our program is concerned with (a) understanding both barriers to, and facilitators of, physical activity behaviour across the age spectrum, and (b) developing conceptually-sound evidence-based interventions that are cost-effective and sustainable.

Mark is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology at UBC. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Exeter (UK), a Master's from Queen's University (Canada) and his Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham (UK). His research primarily focuses on the social psychology of groups within health, exercise, and sport settings. He has published his research in a variety of journals such as the Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Health Psychology, and the Annual Review of Psychology. He is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS), and is the editor for Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology (official journal of Division 47 of the American Psychological Association). These days he particularly enjoys skiing, photography, and running.
Dr. Cailie McGuire
Cailie (she/her) is a Postdoctoral Fellow working with Dr. Mark Beauchamp within the Psychology of Exercise, Health, and Physical Activity Lab. Cailie’s research falls within the umbrella field of sport psychology with a particular interest in team dynamics. Cailie completed her Bachelor of Recreation and Sport Studies at the University of New Brunswick and her MSc and PhD at Queen’s University. Cailie’s doctoral dissertation focused on the importance of building trust between team members to promote athlete thriving. When Cailie isn’t doing research, you can find her at OrangeTheory, out for a run, or walking her many Rover clients!

Dr. Katrina Waldhauser
Katrina’s doctoral research (funded by a SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Scholarship) examined the period of transition from military to civilian life, and the role of physical activity. She is currently working with Dr. Beauchamp on a project related to psychology support providers in professional and Olympic level sport. Outside of her research, Katrina works with athletes and coaches as Certified Mental Performance Consultant. In her free time, Katrina enjoys cycling and hiking the local mountains.

Kay Anderson
Kay (They/He) joined the PEHPA lab in Fall 2022 to pursue their PhD in Kinesiology. He earned their undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, where their research focused on the impact of social norms on physical activity and sedentary behaviours among university students and older adults. Currently, Kay is exploring the experiences of transgender and gender-diverse individuals with physical activity. Additionally, they will be working towards actively engaging the community in the development and evaluation of inclusive physical activity programs, tailored to address the needs identified by the community itself. Outside of their academic pursuits, Kay enjoys exploring new coffee and appreciating the art of horror cinema.

During her undergrad, she focused her studies on physical activity promotion and the inclusion of transgender and queer adolescents in physical activity spaces. Sarah’s current research interests are around the psychological effects of identity concealment, and she is continuing to explore inclusivity practices within the health and exercise domain. In her free time, you can find Sarah spending time with her friends and family or engaging in her creative endeavours!

Narantungalag (Nara) Gerelt-Od
Nara, originally from Mongolia, is a second-year Master’s student in Dr. Beauchamp’s lab. Her master’s thesis research centres on understanding how Mongolian women living in poverty experience physical activity during the coldest and most air-polluted time of the year and perceive barriers and facilitators to safe physical activity. She is also interested in research that involve athletes maltreatment and gender-based violence as she has a background working with survivors of domestive and sexual violence. Nara completed her undergraduate studies in Psychology with a minor in Sociology at Portland State University, USA. Outside of academics, she is mostly found spending quality time with her husband and her two young kids.
