BodyWorks, home of Changing Aging, Evidence-Based Class Programming, Student Development and Community Engagement
About us
BodyWorks is an adult-oriented community exercise program operated by the UBC School of Kinesiology that utilizes experiential learning to develop student leadership, research and kinesiology skills through the delivery of evidence-based exercise programs for older adults and people with chronic conditions.
BodyWorks programs are part of an integrated platform developed to support student learning and create research opportunities in alignment with the academic mission of the School of Kinesiology. The new BodyWorks gym in the Gateway Health Building has been equipped with grant funded equipment that facilitates the integration of research into community exercise programs. BodyWorks provides infrastructure and operational support in this facility, as well as participant engagement through established program and community networks. These resources support both participant recruitment and study implementation.
BodyWorks also offers group exercise programs in partnership with several City of Vancouver community centers to increase student placement opportunities and make the expertise of the School of Kinesiology accessible to the population of British Columbia’s lower mainland.
All BodyWorks trainers and instructors are upper-year students or recent graduates from the School of Kinesiology. They are certified or in the process of becoming certified through the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology as Personal Trainers or Exercise Physiologists.
BodyWorks group programs are also supported by volunteers and work-integrated learning students. Work-integrated learning courses are academic courses where students earn academic credits by completing work placements and independent learning activities, as well as seminars and workshops, to integrate their academic learning with applied experience.
BodyWorks programs are scheduled in alignment with the university academic calendar and are subject to changes in scheduling from term to term due to the following factors:
- Instructor availability
- Research access to the BodyWorks gym
- Community center room allocation
UBC BodyWorks bridges research and practice, developing skilled graduates, supporting the generation of knowledge, and extending the impact of the School of Kinesiology into the community.
