Fiona Brown, BKin

Graduating year: 2020
Hometown: Surrey, BC
Stream: Health Science
Employer: New Port Village Chiropractic
Position title: Technical Chiropractic Assistant

Since Fiona started her co-op placement as Chiropractic Technical Assistant with New Port Village Chiropractic, she’s worked with clinic owner Dr. Gary Barone to help patients reach optimal function and health in their everyday life. Fiona’s daily responsibilities in her role include administering Class IV Deep Tissue laser therapy, performing patient exams, assisting with Active Release Techniques, managing the clinic’s social media platforms, and maintaining the cleanliness of the office. When asked what the most unique thing is about the work that she does, Fiona says, “I perform the CoreScore scans as a part of the patient examination process. The CoreScore scan is comprised of a Heart Rate Variability, Thermal, and Surface EMG scan. I’m able to educate patients on the scans relating to their nervous system as I perform the exam.”

At her placement, Fiona interacts with patients frequently – the aspect of her role she loves the most. “Dr. Barone gives me a lot of freedom and responsibility in terms of my interaction with patients. I am able to perform the majority of the patient examination independently,” she says, which makes her feel as though she’s playing an active and important role within the clinic. “The patients are all very friendly and the clinic atmosphere is contagious.”

The small team environment has really suited Fiona, as she’s enjoyed having a great deal of responsibility and wearing multiple hats throughout her role. “Dr. Barone gives the Tech CA a lot of responsibility with administering laser therapy and performing patient exams, and as a result the student gets a lot of interaction with patients.”

The oversight and knowledge transfer has been part of the extraordinary experience for Fiona. Working daily with the practice owner has meant she’s learned the mechanics behind running a successful clinic. “The role has allowed me to apply what I’m learning in my classes in a practical setting, and I’ve gained human anatomy and nervous system knowledge.”
