Gymnastics Programs

We are not your average gymnastics program!

Under the guidance and leadership of the UBC School of Kinesiology, we provide developmentally appropriate fundamental and advanced recreational gymnastics classes to participants of all ages and levels of ability.

Our program philosophy emphasizes positive sport experiences, physical literacy development,  and encourages life-long participation in physical activity through a wide range of programs.

Gymnastics programs are led by NCCP Gymnastics certified and Active Kids trained instructors, with the additional support of UBC Kinesiology students and volunteers.

2025 Winter Registration will open on Tuesday, November 19th at 10am.

    Parent and Tot & Preschool (1.5-4 Years)

    Parent & Tot (1.5-3 YRS)

    This class is a fun introduction for you and your child to basic gymnastics games, movements, equipment, and skills. It is 45 minutes in duration and parent participation is required at all times.

    Preschool (3-4 YRS)

    This class is for children who are ready to be on their own for a 45 minute class. Children will have fun and build confidence and motivation while stretching, playing games, learning gymnastics skills, and becoming familiar with gymnastics equipment and apparatuses.

    Gym Kids (5-10 Years)

    Gym Kids 1 (5-6 years)

    In this class, children will learn fundamental gymnastics movements and activities to develop agility, balance, coordination, flexibility, and build confidence in a safe, supportive, and fun environment. This recreational style class uses all of the equipment in the gym including bars, beams, floor, trampoline, and more. No experience is necessary and the class is 1 hour in duration.

    Gym Kids 2 (6-7 years)

    In this class, children will learn and may begin to refine fundamental gymnastics movements and skills that develop agility, balance, strength, coordination, flexibility, and build confidence in a safe, supportive, and fun environment. This recreational style class uses all the equipment in the gym, including bars, beams, floor, and trampoline, as well as rope swings, and a climbing wall. No experience is necessary and the class is 1.5 hours in duration.

    Gym Kids 3 (8-10 years)

    In this class, children will learn, refine, and where appropriate may be taught progressively more difficult fundamental gymnastics movements and skills that develop agility, balance, strength, coordination, flexibility, and build confidence in a safe, supportive, and fun environment. This recreational class uses all the equipment in the gym, including bars, beams, floor, and trampoline, as well as rope swings, and a climbing wall. No experience is necessary and the class is 1.5 hours in duration.

    Homeschool Gymnastics (5-10 Years)

    Designed specifically for the home learners community! This program children develop physical literacy and basic gymnastics skills in a fun-filled environment. By working on fundamental gymnastic movements and activities, your child will have an opportunity to develop agility, strength, coordination, flexibility and self-confidence in a safe, supportive and fun environment. This recreational class uses all the equipment in the gym, including bars, beams, floor, and trampoline, as well as rope swings, and a climbing wall. No experience is necessary and the class is 1.5 hours in duration.

    Excel Program (6-14 years)

    The excel program is our advanced recreation gymnastics program. It is suitable for highly motivated children with prior experience, and teaches progressively more advanced skills through each level of the program.

    To register for any excel class, you must first complete an assessment. Processing from the date of the assessment may require up to one full week- so plan in advance for registration purposes!

    Note that an assessment does not guarantee a spot in the program, all registration is first come first served.

    If you are currently attending one of our classes (for example Gym Kids 2, or Excel 1) and would like an assessment, please ask your coach directly before your class. They will be happy to do the assessment during class time. Please note that requests can not always be accommodated on the same day. This is at the coach’s discretion.

    If you have never taken a class with us, and would like an assessment, please contact kin.outreach@ubc.ca

    Once the assessment is complete, the coach will inform you of the results and submit your evaluation form to the main registration office for processing (up to one week). Please note that for safety purposes, all final assessment result decisions are at the sole discretion of Active Kids.

    Excel 1 (6-10 years)

    Excel 1 is recommended for children that are comfortable with the fundamental gymnastic skills, so that increased skill complexity can be introduced in a structured, controlled, and fun environment. Each class is 2 hours in duration. An assessment is required.

    Excel 2 (7-12 years)

    Excel 2 is recommended for children ready to learn handsprings, able to do basic mounts on the bars, and build on the skills introduced in the Excel 1 program in a structured, controlled, and fun environment. Each class is 2 hours in duration. An assessment is required.

    Excel 3 (8-14 years)

    Excel 3 is recommended for children that have learned handsprings and are interested in learning skills with a higher level of complexity in a structured, controlled, and fun environment. Due to the advanced level of the program, Excel 3 participants are encouraged to register for 2 classes per week. Each class is 2 hours in duration. An assessment is required.

    Trampoline and Tumbling (8-14 Years)

    The ideal program for children who want to focus just on the trampoline and floor.

    Beginner Trampoline and Tumbling (8-12 years)

    This is a recreational style gymnastics class in which participants are taught fundamental gymnastics skills, specifically using the trampoline, sprung floor, and mini trampolines. No experience is necessary and each class is 1 hour in duration.

    Intermediate/Advanced Trampoline and Tumbling (8-14 years)

    This class is intended for children who are prepared to learn intermediate to advanced skills on the trampoline, mini trampoline and sprung floor in a fun and safe environment. Each class is 1.5 hours in duration. An assessment is required prior to being eligible for registration. In order to schedule an assessment please email us at kin.outreach@ubc.ca.

    Teen 1 / 2 (11-17 years)

    This recreational gymnastics style class is for teens of all skill levels. It includes a focus on fundamental skill acquisition and technical development. There is also a focus on having fun, social development, strength, coordination, flexibility, and goal setting. No experience is necessary and each class is 2 hours in duration.

    High School Competitive Program (13-17 years)

    This program requires no previous gymnastics experience. However, it is restricted to high school students who, between September to March, are fully committed to regular weekly training that culminates with local and provincial competitions where they represent their local high school.

    The program offers a more individualized experience based on the athletes goals and skill level. It also provides the opportunity to train and work alongside likeminded peers, meet new friends, and build confidence and motivation in a safe, supportive and fun environment.

    Skill development, choreography, strength and fitness, coordination, flexibility, mental preparation, and goal setting are just some of the many components of this program.

    This program has a maximum capacity on a yearly basis. Program registration is restricted to participants who are already part of the program. If you have any questions, or are new and would like to join the program, please contact Kari Brackenbury at kari.brackenbury@ubc.ca.

    Sample Yearly Schedule:

    FALL (Sept-Dec): Weekly classes to prepare for competitions, this includes by skills and technique development for performance, learning choreography and routines, and determining competition level. New athletes welcome.

    WINTER (Jan-Mar): Weekly classes continue and the local and provincial competition season begins. Exact competitions and dates vary, typically 3-4 events are offered between Jan-Mar. The Provincial competition may require travel. *Only athletes registered in the Fall term may join the Winter term and compete.

    SUMMER (July/August): Weekly classes and training camps are offered so athletes can maintain skills and conditioning. New athletes welcome.

    SPRING (May-June): Weekly classes are offered for athletes to focus on skill development, and conditioning. New athletes welcome.

    Adult Program (18+ Years)

    This recreational style gymnastics class offers adults of all ages and levels of ability the opportunity to learn and improve their gymnastics skills and overall fitness levels in a fun and goals focused environment.  This class includes both structured skill instruction and free time to practice independently with full access to all equipment in the gym. No previous gymnastics experience is required and each class is 2 hours in duration.

    Adult Promo: If you have previously registered for our Adult program OR are currently are UBC Kinesiology Staff/Student/Faculty, you may be eligible for a 15% discount. Please contact the registration office for more details.

    Special Events

    Register your kids and enjoy a day to yourself! Children ages 4-12 will enjoy a fun-filled day of gymnastics, games and activities. Please bring a healthy nut free snack for break time as well as a water bottle.

    Virtual Gymnastics Classes

    Are your kids at home and need of some exercise? Active Kids Gymnastics is bringing our classic fun and high energy recreational gymnastics classes to your living room!

    All activities will be easy to follow along with, require equipment you commonly find at home, and are designed to keep you child active and entertained while at home.

    Session 1: Intro to Gymnastics Movements

    Offered in partnership with UBC Camps Play and Learn, we invite you to join us for an introduction to gymnastics-based movements and skill progressions for beginners. This lesson will include a warm-up, active stretching, and instruction on movements that will help the participant become familiar with body positions that will lead to successful jumps, rolls, cartwheels and handstands. *Required Equipment: yoga mat or blanket, pillows, sofa or sturdy chair, 6×6 ft clear area

    Session 2: Jump, Land, and Stick

    Offered in partnership with UBC Camps Play and Learn, we invite you to join us for an introduction to the common gymnastics jumps, including star, tuck, and straddle. Safe landing techniques will be covered for 2 feet, 1 foot, and turning in the air. Tips on how to stick landings and hold balances will also be covered. Options for beginner, intermediate and advanced participants will be offered, and is a fun way to build strength and confidence for everyday activities.

    Session 3: Rock, Step, and Roll

    Offered in partnership with UBC Campus + Community Planning for the Kids Take Over UBC! event, we invite you to join us for an introduction to the common gymnastics freezes, shapes, landing techniques, and rolls! Join our coach as you learn gymnastics based skills and techniques, while playing fun games in the comfort of your home!
