Hi everybody! My name is Davin and I’m currently a second year student in the Interdisciplinary Stream. Last summer I was a Jump Start commuter orientation leader for 34 amazing KIN students. I’ve always been engaged in community-based work, so when I arrived at UBC I was immediately drawn to our unique KIN student body. I like to dedicate my time to activities that are close to my heart. As soon as I had the chance I signed up to become an orientation leader.
Leadership, to me, is about being someone others can respect and learn from. As an orientation leader, I’ve learned that people truly appreciate your efforts to make a positive difference. Serving in this role has helped me to increase my self-confidence, expand my interpersonal skills, and learn to consolidate the right amount of compassion, caring, and spirit. My experience was so positive that it inspired me to become even more involved in the KIN community.
The opportunity to serve as an orientation leader is something that should not be overlooked. I can tell you that this will be an unforgettable experience. For most people an undergraduate degree only lasts 4 to 5 years. Once you graduate, there won’t be as many opportunities for you to grow, discover yourself, or serve short leadership stints where you can create such an impact. Make the most of of your time here—sign up now and don’t look back.
