Message from the Director, School of Kinesiology

Dear Kinesiology Community,

Mid-March seems a long time ago when the whole university rapidly transitioned to online learning and remote working. This shift was a major challenge for everyone, yet students, faculty and staff in the School responded robustly and gave their best effort to complete the term successfully. I am deeply appreciative of faculty and staff for their dedication to students, guiding them through the final stretch of the semester. I also commend all KIN students for their patience, perseverance and fortitude during this time.

With nature in full bloom and summer in sight we can begin to look optimistically toward the future. We can look forward to celebrating Kinesiology graduates at the Virtual Spring Convocation taking place on June 17. In addition to the UBC ceremony, we are also planning to send a virtual message to our inspiring KIN graduates.

This week marks the beginning of BC’s 4-Phase Restart Plan for COVID-19, and the start of the UBC summer term. The resumption of activity and operations across different sectors will be gradual, in phases, and guided by enhanced protocols. UBC has been identified as a component of the Phase 3 restart plan, which will take place between June and September, if transmission rates remain low. UBC is developing an operational safety plan as this phase unfolds under the guidance of the provincial government, Ministry of Health and WorkSafe BC.

We are adapting to the constantly changing circumstances and I am inspired and deeply appreciative of the School community’s collaborative dedication to maintaining our excellence on all levels while keeping healthy, safe and positive.

Recognizing that large group gatherings will remain restricted into the Fall 2020 academic term, and aligning our strategy with our commitment to the health and safety of the UBC community, the School is in the planning phase to deliver all Fall term courses in an online format. The School’s faculty have already been hard at work preparing to construct online course modules with unique design features and models to ensure that the highest quality of online learning can be offered to new and returning students this Fall. Also, under the guidance and emerging safety protocols developed by UBC, the School’s faculty will gradually return to their research labs.

Over the next few months, we will continue to keep you informed of developments at UBC and at the School. We are already planning creative ways to meaningfully engage, inform and guide new and returning KIN students for the Fall term in the School of Kinesiology. While the university experience will be somewhat different, our goal is to ensure that students and all members of the School are supported and feel collectively part of our unique and enduring KIN culture.
