My most memorable moments at UBC seem to be balancing sports with school! I played on the Junior National Field Hockey Team in my first and second year and the Varsity Field Hockey Team for my 5 years, so I was always on the go.

Jean Forrest, 1983 Physical Education (Kinesiology) graduate, while at UBC was one of Canada’s outstanding field hockey players on some of UBC’s best teams.
Freiheit, Robyn

After working in marketing and project management jobs for a number of years Robyn says she “became uneasy in my roles as they were not satisfying my need to make a larger impact in the social issues around me”. So she took a leap of faith this year and started a Master of Public Health at the University of Porto in Portugal.

Frick’s coaching career has resulted in an outpouring of acknowledgements. A sample includes seven Canadian Coaching Association Excellence Awards, 1998 Sport BC Coach of the Year, 3M Male Coach of 2001, BC Wheelchair Sports Coach of the Millennium, Geoff Gowan Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Wheelchair Basketball Canada Hall of Fame and the Order of British Columbia.
Gandhi, Preet

While he was at UBC, Preet spent 3 years as a board member for the Ustawi Health Research Association, an organization that focused on providing resources and support for students looking to work in and learn about global health. “I also launched a global health club, and got involved in gerontology research through the UBC School of Nursing at that time.”

An Indigenous Undergraduate alumnus, as a student, she had started to work in Professor Bill Sheel’s Health and Integrative Physiology Lab the summer before her fourth year, after receiving an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award.
Girke, Nikola

Nikola Girke, BHK 1999, studied health and fitness during her undergraduate year and played for the UBC Women’s Rugby team; recognized for her academic and athletic success as an Academic All-Canadian student in 2000. However, despite Nikola’s achievements as a varsity athlete in Rugby, it was sailing that was her true passion.
Graffos, Angelo

Combining his love of sports and working with children and youth, Angelo has been involved as a volunteer, support worker, and skills head coach for the Canucks Autism Network since 2014. His consistent and dedicated work has been recognized by the organization with a volunteer training scholarship in 2017.
Griffith, Clyde

Clyde, from Trinidad, was part of this unique period, first enrolling in Medicine then realizing physical education and recreation were his passions. Also a noted musician, Clyde graduated from UBC in 1964 – he was International Student of the Year in 1962 – and quickly found his fellow alumni not only assisted his career but became life-long friends.
