Lumsden, Matthew

Graduating year: 2018, 2020
Degree: HPCTL, MHPCTL
Matthew currently works as the Technical Programs Director for a large soccer club in Alberta. He has coached at the Provincial Level in Canada and with the Youth National Club league in the United Kingdom.


Lusk, Serena

Graduating year: 1997
Degree: BHK
Serena Lusk, BHK 1997, found her beginnings in recreation as a competitive swimmer in her early teens. As a junior swim coach at age 13 and a lifeguard at 16, Serena knew early on that she wanted to be involved in sport and recreation as a career.


MacFarlane, Dave

Graduating year: 1989
Degree: BPE
Dave Macfarlane is another example of the diversity in career paths taken by UBC graduates in Physical Education (Human Kinetics/Kinesiology). A 1989 graduate, Dave played Thunderbird hockey in 1984-85 under the coaching of Fred Masuch.


MacKinnon, Dean

Graduating year: 1966
Degree: BPE
While a student, Dean played basketball under coach Hugh Marshall at John Oliver high school then attending UBC played on the Thunderbird rugby team. He was a pretty fair athlete which is required when refereeing high school basketball games, a career he began around age 30.


MacLean, Heather

Graduating year: 2015
Degree: BKin
We caught up with Heather who told us, “Growing up, sports played a large role in my home as my parents enrolled me into everything from dancing, gymnastics, soccer, hockey to swimming.” But at the age of 8, Heather started swimming competitively for the Etobicoke Swim club, and as she says “the rest is history!”


Mahlalela, Jama

Graduating year: 2004
Degree: BHK
Jama Mahlalela, a BHK ‘04 alumnus of the UBC School of Kinesiology, was a Varsity basketball star, a community leader, and is now the head coach of the Raptors 905 G League in the NBA. He was a key contributor in the Raptor’s 2019 win against the Golden State Warriors making the Raptors the first team outside of the US to win the NBA Championship.


Maliha, Kate

Graduating year: 2010
Degree: MA, Human Kinetics
After graduating in 2010, Kate founded Love Your Age Fitness Inc. Bringing her education into practice, Kate and her team have developed inclusive, unique and creative exercise spaces and programs for older adults.


Maxwell, Jenna

Graduating year: 2009
Degree: BHK
Jenna attributes her ability to think out of the box to her favourite KIN professor Dr. Karim Kahn, and believes that her psychology courses have been very helpful in understanding human behaviour. “I wouldn't be able to do my job without my KIN background.”


McCabe, Martha

Graduating year: 2012
Degree: BKIN
Martha is a 2-time Olympic swimmer in the 200m breaststroke, a world championship, Pan Am Games medallist, and the president and founder of Head to Head Mentorship Program.


McKaig, Terry

Graduating year: 1997
Degree: BHK
Terry as a player had made the Canadian national baseball team in 1995 but prior to his UBC appointment in 1997 had never before coached. Once he, along with his supporters the “Friends of Thunderbird Baseball”, established the program as part of the NAIA, the team experienced remarkable success.
