The late Casey Smith, a 1988 Kinesiology graduate, happens to be one of only three UBC head coaches to guide the ‘Birds to Canada’s university football championship, the Vanier Cup.

Tolhurst played pro football in Hamburg Germany and with the BC Lions in 2003. Following his pro career Art embarked upon a football coaching career in Vienna Austria then later served as an intern at the University of South Florida.

Morrow’s UBC rowing experience was an early chapter in what would evolve to become one of Canada’s most impressive coaching resumes. For five decades Morrow either rowed for or coached Canada’s National team with his teams winning eighteen medals at World Championships in addition to four golds, one silver and eight bronze in Olympic competition.

Dr. Babul’s journey to becoming a North American leader in concussion recognition, response, management and prevention began over a decade ago. In response to this gap in knowledge, Shelina used what she had learned during her time in the School of Kinesiology and her experience as a sport injury specialist.

Rebekah is currently a Family Medicine Resident at UBC in the Vancouver Indigenous site. Her program is a small distributed program, with strong ties to Indigenous communities. “I am learning how our preceptors help to build strength at a community level by building up individuals. As a multitude of our patients have experienced trauma, building safe spaces in health care is of utmost importance,” she says.

As director of the Ride to Conquer Cancer at the BC Cancer Foundation, Lindsay Carswell has had the privilege of building a career which enables him to make a lasting difference in the lives of others. By overseeing BC’s largest mass participation fundraising event for the past five years, Lindsay has had the opportunity to promote cycling to thousands of British Columbians looking to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Serena Lusk, BHK 1997, found her beginnings in recreation as a competitive swimmer in her early teens. As a junior swim coach at age 13 and a lifeguard at 16, Serena knew early on that she wanted to be involved in sport and recreation as a career.
