Hi! My name is Christy and I’m in my 5th year in the Interdisciplinary stream, minoring in Psychology. I never really expected to end up in Kinesiology – I actually spent most of my childhood and early teens wanting to become a vet. But after 2 concussions from hockey and a lot of health issues, I found myself wanting to explore ways to somehow be a part of other people’s health journeys. It’s hard to imagine doing anything other than KIN at this point, but one of the things I appreciate the most about being in this program is that there is so much room to explore different paths! From choosing a minor that I love, to getting involved in programs like the Interprofessional Health Mentors Program and clubs like Sisu of UBC, I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to build my own meaningful undergrad experience. If I had to give any advice it would definitely be to give yourself the time to build your student years in your own way. Be open to new things, even if they are uncomfortable. And most importantly, be patient and kind to yourself!

Throughout all of my experiences so far, and especially in co-op, I’ve learned that what you get out of them always depends on how much effort you put in. I joined the co-op program in my 2nd year and it has been such a significant part of my KIN degree. I was lucky enough to do my first 2 work terms at Optimal Performance Clinic, and earlier this year I spent 4 months at New Roots Adult Day Program as a Rehabilitation Assistant. Each experience was completely different from the other, but equally important in shaping my career goals and values. Getting practical experience through co-op is not only a unique way to work as a student, but also an invaluable way to explore careers, develop applied and interpersonal skills, and make connections in the professional world. Co-op also led me to become more involved in the KIN community by joining the K-CSAC, and even getting the chance to lead the team for the past 2 years. Meeting and working with so many amazing student leaders to add to the student experience has truly been a highlight. After grad in May 2020, I hope to always continue learning and plan to pursue occupational therapy with a focus on working with older adults!
