I am a proud alumna of UBC’s School of Kinesiology, having recently graduated in May 2017. I’m originally from sunny Kelowna, and enjoyed the Okanagan’s snowy ski seasons growing up. I chose to attend UBC’s Point Grey campus because it’s where my parents received their degrees. My dad even spent a whopping 7 years studying drosophila melanogaster! (i.e. fruit flies…)
Since graduating, life as an alumna has exposed me to many career fields; I’ve already worked in student affairs with Student Housing, designed health curriculum with UBC Health, and worked as a Kinesiologist at Neuromotion Physiotherapy. Currently, I work at the Physical Activity Research Centre (PARC) at ICORD in a supervisory role and with Dr. Tania Lam and some of her graduate students; we are beginning to roll out curricula and training on adaptive exercise & inclusion with many groups in the Lower Mainland. The rest of my time is spent working with HeadCheck Health, and volunteering with Vancouver Coastal Health’s outreach program.
My professional goals have evolved greatly and I have solidified my interests in Medicine and Public Health. Specifically, I would like to work in Family Practice on preventive care, or Sports Medicine, with a focus on parasport and female athletes. Regarding Public Health, my degree from UBC and recent work experience exposed me to the necessity of Primary Care reform. I hope to integrate exercise into Primary Care and study the influence of sociocultural factors on the spread of noncommunicable disease. My goals do not have any specific deadlines as I have learned the importance of experience and some healthy downtime before diving back into academics!
I’m excited about the inception of the young Alumni Focus and Advisory Groups! My short-term goals involve promotion and engagement in order to reach as many alumni as possible. In the long-term, I hope the alumni community allows members to push each other’s professional and personal boundaries for continued growth & learning, and that we can create strong inter-generational relationships.
